LIVE LONG AND WELL: THE SECRETS OF LONGEVITY IN SARDINIA

In the world, there is a unique region, enveloped in an atmosphere of mystery and charm, where time seems to pass more slowly and where people defy aging with incredible grace. This magical place is Sardinia, an island kissed by the sun in the heart of the Mediterranean, which for centuries has guarded the secrets of longevity

DAN BUETTNER AND THE DISCOVERY OF “BLUE ZONES”

The first venture into the discovery of this extraordinary phenomenon were scholars and explorers, including the renowned Dan Buettner, a journalist and member of National Geographic’s exploration team. In 2004, Buettner gave birth to the concept of “blue zones” after an expedition to Okinawa, Japan, in 2000, where he investigated the longevity of its inhabitants. From there, he embarked on a journey around the world with a team of scientists and demographers, supported by National Geographic, in search of communities where people not only lived longer, but also enjoyed a high quality of life in old age. Buettner and his team identified Five Blue Zones: the previously mentioned Okinawa Island in Japan, the Ogliastra region in Sardinia, Ikaria Island in Greece, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and an area of California called Loma Linda

THE BLUE ZONE PHENOMENON

Dan Buettner was so surprised by his research’s results that he felt the need to share his adventure and findings with the whole world. He thus decided to create a TV series on Netflix called “The Blue Zones (Zone blu: i segreti della longevità | Sito ufficiale Netflix), through which he detailed the lifestyle and common practices of the various populations analyzed. The series not only explores the customs and traditions, but also offers practical advice for adopting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Thanks to Netflix, Buettner has contributed to raising greater awareness of the importance of well-being and health.

FIRST DISCOVERS – SARDINIA

During his studies on our beloved Island, they discovered more than just a simple statistic: Sardinia hosts one of the world’s longest-living populations, with an extraordinary number of centenaries defying the laws of time.

But what are the secrets of this extraordinary longevity? The answer lies in ancient traditions, family ties and the daily life of the Sardinians, embodying a lifestyle unique in its kind.

THE POWER OF FAMILY TIES

One of the distinctive features of life in Sardinia is the importance of family. Here, family ties are sacred and represent the foundation of society. Intergenerational solidarity is a constant, with the elderly playing a central role in everyday life, transmitting wisdom, experience and love to younger generations.

THE SARDINIAN DIET: A TREASURE FOR HEALTH

Furthermore, the Sardinian diet is a true treasure for health. Based on fresh, local ingredients, rich in fish vegetables and extra virgin olive oil, Sardinian cuisine is an authentic source of well-being. Pecorino cheese, produced from gazing sheep, is a key food, rich in omega-3 and valuable nutrients for the heart and brain.

ACTIVE LIFESTYLE AND FRESH AIR: THE SECRETS OF WELL-BEING

But it’s not just the diet that contributes to the longevity of Sardinians. An active lifestyle and outdoor living play a fundamental role. Walking through the charming landscapes of Sardinia, breathing pure air, and enjoying the generous sun is a habit that not only promotes physical health, but also mental and spiritual well-being

CANNONAU: AN ELIXIR OF LONGEVITY

Finally, we cannot overlook the importance of red wine in Sardinian culture. Cannonau wine takes different names depending on the specific provenance. It is consumed in moderation during meals, is rich in antioxidants and appears to contribute to heart health and stress reduction, promoting a healthier and longer life. This precious beverage has been praised by illustrious artists who have celebrated its flavor and regenerative power, such as Gabriele D’Annunzio, during his trip to Sardinia during 1882.

“Do you not know Nepente of Oliena even by fame? Alas, the snare! I know only its scent: and the scent, unspeakable, was enough to rapture me”

Gabriele D’Annunzio

THE HOME OF BIEN VIVRE

In conclusion, Sardinia is not just a land of sea and sun, but an authentic paradise for those who wish to live long and healthy lives. With its ancient traditions, delicious cuisine and balanced lifestyle, the Island enchants not only tourists but also those who choose to call it home. Whether it’s enjoying the company of family, savoring a good glass of wine, or strolling along its breathtaking coasts, Sardinia offers an invaluable lesson on the beauty of life and the joy of longevity.
