These are the words the renowned Japanese architect Koichi Takada<\/strong> released during a recent interview for Luxury Defined<\/strong>, Christie’s Real Estate blog. In one of the last articles appeared on their pages<\/a> they’ve wondered about the future of design and the answer was almost unanimous: biophilic design<\/strong>. But what exactly is meant by this term?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Biophilic Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The term “biophilia”<\/strong> refers to man’s natural affinity with the entire natural world.<\/strong> When applied to architecture, this goes to indicate the incorporation of natural elements to the design of buildings.<\/strong> We can therefore say that biophilic design is a new and innovative way of interpreting the design of the places we live, work and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new vision seems to be the evolution of “green architecture” (we have explored the topic here).<\/a> It is in fact a type of architecture that not only looks at the sustainability of projects, but also at their integration with the surrounding environment, so as to reconnect human nature with the natural world.<\/strong> Recent studies have shown how being close to nature improves people’s performance, mood and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Elements of Biophilic Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Key element of designing according to the canons of biophilic design is the use of natural and local raw materials. <\/strong>It increases the connection between the interior and the surrounding environment.<\/strong> But it also helps to recreate natura<\/strong>l environments within the buildings themselves through the management of spaces, shapes and colors. The slide above shows just a few clear examples of this design, with the clever use of wood and rock with not only ornamental, but also functional application.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
